Grandparents Day

This Sunday is Grandparents Day, a day to celebrate the importance of grandparents and that unique relationship with grandchildren.

For some it will be a lovely day full of hugs, cuddles chocolates and flowers.

But not for all.

Just like Fathers Day and Mothers Day, there will be many people feeling a major void, as a result of estrangement/alienation, the hurt and pain impossible to describe.

Whether we in fact need a day to celebrate grandparents is for another debate, but the reality for millions, not only of grandparents but grandchildren as well, is another day to stay hidden under the duvet. To hope to wake up once it is over.

Grandchildren will no doubt be making their special cards to take to their grandparents, but what about the millions who wont be able to do that?

When I was working, I always remember the children who when faced with having to make these ‘special’ cards, in most cases would just carry on and make them, it was easier to do that than to say that they didn’t see mum, dad or grandparents.

The damage that this sort of thing does to children is just terrible and can have life long repercussions.

How can they possibly understand that the adults in their lives can prevent them from having a loving and caring relationship with all of their family members.

The truth of course is that none of us understand why.

For all grandparents who will not be receiving those special treats once again this year, remember that you are still these children’s grandparents, and you always will be. These precious children live in your heart every day, whatever that day may be, and you live in theirs.
